Health Screening

Below is information regarding the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry health requirements for all matriculating students:

  • A detailed physical examination by a licensed medical provider
  • A completed personal self health history form
  • Provide the results of a current PPD (Mantoux) Tuberculosis skin test, which is no older than 6 months old to the start date of the program into which you were accepted
  • If you have had a positive Mantoux TB Skin test in the past, you will need to provide proof of a recent “negative” chest x-ray, which is no older than 6 months old to the start date of the program into which you were accepted
  • All international students are required to be screened for TB in the United States or Canada within 6 months prior to the start date of the program. A photocopy of laboratory report of a negative Quatiferon blood test or T-Spot blood test is required. No handwritten results will be accepted. A history of BCG vacciniation does NOT fulfill this requirement.
  • Proof of Tetanus immunizations within the past 10 years
  • Laboratory proof of immunization status to Measles (Rubella and Rubeola) and Mumps and Varicella. History of immunization is not adequate proof. Kab values indicating immunity status is necessary.
  • All students entering the dental school must have a Hepatitis B core Antibody blood test even if you have already completed the Hepatitis B vaccine series. NOTE: If you have already completed the Hepatitis B vaccine series, you will also need to have a QUANTITATIVE Hepatitis B surface antibody laboratory test

Positive Hepatitis B Test: If an entering resident/student’s Hepatitis B core Antibody is “positive”, then additional lab tests are mandatory. The additional labs are a Hepatitis B surface Antibody and Hepatitis B surface Antigen. If the surface Antibody (HBsAb) test comes back > 10 mIU/mL, then the individual has cleared the infection. If the surface Antigen blood test is positive, then a Hepatitis B DNA blood test is required.

For individuals whose HBV DNA level is less than 4 logs (meaning 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 10,000 IU/mL or copies/mL) will be allowed to enroll and matriculate through the program, but with certain conditions as established by an expert review panel and with the person signing a contract delineating specific requirements regarding the resident/student’s performances in the clinical setting. The individual must consent to having HBV DNA lab test, every 4 months (at their expense).

Individuals whose HBV DNA level is greater than 4 logs (meaning equal to or higher than 10,001 IU/mL or copies/mL) will be allowed to enroll and matriculate through the program but with certain conditions as established by an expert review panel – with the person signing a contract delineating specific requirements regarding the resident/student’s performances in the clinical setting.
